Tar seems to have a files limitation

I've seemed to have found a bug in tar 1.13. After having used tar for
years, I suddenly started getting this error:

.//weekly.generic.bu: line 19: 29776 File size limit exceeded tar -T $FD -X
$SFD --totals -icvf $TARFILE >>$TOC
tar backup finished with status 153

I had switched to the Journal File System on my /backups disk to eliminate
the potential problem with a file size > 2GB, but not even getting close to
this size. I've tried tar with and without the 'z' option, and tried both
ext2 and jfs file systems, no difference.
