I know finding this happening on a proprietary list of files could have been a
problem. That's why I thought attaching the directory listing of the files
could have been some help. I thought the utility couldn't cope with the large
list of files.

Superb. It is. Many thanks. And only released 4 days ago. If I was more adept
at GNU+Linux I would have known that strings was a part of binutils and to
download the update first. As it is I only learned about the command strings
this morning. And "strings *" was the first thing I typed.
I am extremely grateful for all the wonderful work you are all doing for free
software.
