TAR backup hangs during restore or compare on a UNIX system

Hello,

I would like to know some suggestions to the above mention problem, the
tape backup is done without any problems
the drive is a scsi LW drive. all scsi basic's are checked and no problems
found
when restoring the background programm's are terminated.
I use a lvd controler and the termination is also oke.and there are no
other devices on the chain.
When trying to restore or compare the computer freezes up and the computer
has to be restarted again.
