error in "make install" for GNU dbm 1.8

I built OK on sparc-sun-solaris2.6, but when I do "make install" I get
these errors:

# make install
./mkinstalldirs /usr/local/lib /usr/local/include /usr/local/man/man3 
/usr/local/info
/bin/sh ./libtool install -c libgdbm.la /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.la
install -c libgdbm.la /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.la
cp: cannot access /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.la
install: cp /usr/local/lib/libgdbm.la libgdbm.la/libgdbm.la failed
*** Error code 2
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `install'

I can't seem to work around this.  Am I missing something obvious here?
