GNU Installation problem on AIX

Hi,

I am trying to install GNU C compiler on AIX 5.1.I downloaded the tar file and 
untared it.

I read the README file.Accordingly,

I do './configure' and then when I try 'make' it gives me an error message 




$ make
        gcc -c -DHAVE_UNISTD_H=1 -DVOID_CLOSEDIR=1 -DRETSIGTYPE=int  gzip.c
cpp: installation problem, cannot exec `cpp': The parameter or environment 
lists 
are too long.
make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 1.


Stop.
$ 

Please let me know if this is not the procedure that I should follow to install 
or are there any special options that I should set?
