Sorry, my mistake. I didn't actually cut and paste what I was typing.
grep soc*
-or-
grep 'soc*'
-or-
grep soc\*
In addition, I was able to verify this same bug exists with grep 2.1
on sun4u Solaris 2.8 and grep 2.3 on sun4u Solaris 2.6, so it doesn't
seem to be platform or architecture related.
