No, these don't. Not in any version of tar I could find around me. They
either terminate because there's no tape in the drive:

gtar: can't open archive /dev/nrmt1h : No such file or directory
gtar: child returned status 3

or they sit there, trying to read a tar file off stdin, which may feel
like they're hanging, but they aren't. Type your local EOF character
(Ctrl-D on most Unices) and you'll be back in your shell prompt.
