Hello,

No, the file system (minus backup file) is 800Mbyte
while the tgz file is 600Mbyte (I know that's not a
good compression ratio, especially since not all
of the 800Mbyte file system is included in the backup).
I never really create an uncompressed tar file because
of the huge disk space.  Also, I never extract the whole
file hierarchy from the tgz backup, though I regularly
retrieve selected files of interest.

By any chance, is the unzipped file > 2 GB on an OS that doesn't support
large files?
