If it matters, I haven't had that problem with screen-3.9.10 on
Solaris 7 (sparc).  I'm running screen without any of the setuid
business; perhaps that's what is messing you up.  It's also possible

$ type screen
screen is /opt/reb/bin/screen
$ ls -l /opt/reb/bin/screen
-r-xr-xr-x   1 eggert   src       310208 Sep 12 12:30 /opt/reb/bin/screen
$ screen --version
Screen version 3.09.10 (FAU) 4-Sep-01
$ uname -a
SunOS green.twinsun.com 5.7 Generic_106541-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-1

You can get screen-3.9.10 from ftp.gnu.org/gnu/screen.
