I still have that patch.  At the time I received it I had bigger fish to
fry, and I also feel that the problem was considerably more theoretical
than real.  Also, the point about portability / availability of mktemp(1)
is an issue.

I will probably go with Paul's patch that does everything in shell
variables, for 3.1.2.
