i was linking to a .a that obviously contained something funky.  i scratch 
rebuilt that, and the error below went away.

since /usr/bin/ld pleads with me to report this bug, here you go.

/usr/bin/ld: BFD 2.11.92.0.12 20011121 internal error, aborting at elf32-i386.c 
line 2044 in elf_i386_relocate_section

binutils came from mandrake 8.2.

an upgrade from the mandrake cooker produced the similiar

/usr/bin/ld: BFD 2.12.90.0.7 20020423 internal error, aborting at elf32-i386.c 
line 2047 in elf_i386_relocate_section

i'll be happy to supply any details you'd like.
