FYI,
My testing shows that:
1. CPIO 2.5 fixes the problem I was having of sparse files getting
truncated when the holes where at the end.
2. TAR 1.13.25 does not fix the problems I was having with sparse files
and tar (at least under RedHat 7.1 on my test system). Specifically,
the following do not seem to actually create sparse files:
tar --sparse -cf /tmp/test.tar test
tar --sparse -xf /tmp/test.tar
