i can reproduce the failures of 'make test' in building perl 5.8.0, or even
in installing CPAN modules 'make test' portion, using binutils 2.13, under
not just solaris 9, but solaris 8 and solaris 7.
downgrading to 2.12 immediately solves the problem.
again, happy to provide more thorough diagnostic data if desired.
