Hi Stepan,

Thanks for the quick response and useful info. I'll try 2.5 when I get
a chance. It may be a few days - possibly not until the weekend -
because the box affected is my system at home, which I don't get as much
time to work on as I'd like.

As regards trying out sub-versions I'm more than happy to assist.

Regards,

Brian

Hello,
thank you for your bug report.

the last "stable" version of grep is 2.5. Version 2.5.1 seems to be
considered as development version.

So the next natural step is to test version 2.5. Use grep-2.5.tar.bz2
from ftp.gnu.org, if you won't be able to find a pre-packed src rpm.

Then I'd look at the diff between the two versions where the performance
changed, break the diff into smaller patches until I find the change
which causes the problem.

I could prepare such "sub-versions" so that you can test them; this way
we can probably find out what's the problem. (Mail me if you are
intersted.)

Thank you again,
        Stepan Kasal
