Ah, never mind the last message, the problem goes away when I remove
-O2, so I have obviously found a compiler bug. (time passes...)
And it goes away when I compile with gcc 3.2.
Does gcc -O2 eliminate tail calls? Is that the explanation for the
funny backtrace? I noticed immediately after I sent the last
message that there are tail calls in this function.
