Greetings,
ld's info page says that VERSION scripts may have C style comments delimited by '/*' and '*/', but ld fails with errors such as this: 

/usr/bin/ld:ld.version:3: ignoring invalid character `/' in script
/usr/bin/ld:ld.version:3: parse error in VERSION script

where ld.version was the VERSION file.
