Problem with GNU ld version 2.14.90.0.1 20030505 (Linux)

Dear binutils gurus, 

after installation of H.J.Lu's latest binutils-2.14.90.0.1 for Linux, I
came across a problem. Trying to compile different programs, error
messages like this occurred time and again:

/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.2.3/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld:
.libs/test-ename-western: hidden symbol `atexit' in
/usr/lib/libc_nonshared.a(atexit.oS) is referenced by DSO
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

After overwriting /usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld with the ld binary taken
from GNU ld version 2.13.90.0.20 20030319, the same sources compiled
like a charm.

System info: Linux 2.4.20-pre10-ac1, GCC 2.3.2.

Sorry, this is an obscure report, but I don't really seem to have an
idea of what kind of test I could perform to better spot the problem.
