grep -r problem

I just installed the latest version of grep on my HPUX box. I can't get the -r option to recurse. When I use

 grep -l -r void *.c
which results in the following message

grep: *.c: No such file or directory

If I remove the *.c and use just *, it works but the search is much to wide.

Am I using the recursive option wrong. I have tried this several different ways. Any help would be appreciated, since the only reason I installed this newer version was for the recursion capability.

Thanks,

Russ Koyle
