This indicates that gawk is being passed an invalid arugment or program.
You will have to read through the mailscanner script to find the problem.

This indicates that you're using a fairly old version of gawk. You
may wish to upgrade to the current version.

> /etc/rc.d/init.d/mailscanner: {print $1}: command not found

Hmm; it sounds like the script doesn't have the awk code on the
same line as the awk invocation...
