Yes, if the purpose of removal the VPATH variable on 2003-02-12 was to
make the Makefile.in usable with non-GNU makes, than maybe such
approach should be considered.

Oops, my mistake! You are right, I've overlooked it. Moreover, the
INSTALLPREFIX issue is actually a consequence of this.
