Not with the '-e' option. Perhaps you meant 'diff -n'?

I don't get that result, either with GNU diff 2.7 or 2.8.4.
Perhaps you're using Solaris diff? If so, it sounds like a bug to me,
but on the other hand POSIX doesn't specify the behavior of the -n option
so it may be hard to convince Sun of that.
