sure it is possible, either piping the data to gzip or using zlib.
Or you could upgrade the Linux kernel to allow files bigger than 2GB.

I'm affraid you cannot get more help from this list, as it is dedicated
to reporting bugs of GNU software.
But you are on the right track and I'm sure you'll find the solution.
