Sure, it's easy to _code_ it.  I meant it's not worth the fuss of having
long, complicated manual and of breaking backward compatibility of
GREP_OPTIONS=-r

I am sorry that it causes you inconvenience, but I'm currently strongly
aginst such a kludge.

I'm not happy with any of the proposals, I believe each of them would bring
complication to some people.  The current way, it's at least consistent.
