Install problem with gdbm

I tried to install gdbm-1.8.3 on my Mac OSX-10.3.4 machine. Configure came up with "bin" as the value for BINOWN and BINGRP, but bin doesn't exist by default on OSX. More reasonable values for OSX would be root and wheel.
