it should be enough to set the C locale:
export LC_ALL=C
(or "setenv LC_ALL C" in csh)
Then the performance should be accptable. (Red Hat uses UTF8 locale
by default.) Or you can define an alias to call
LC_ALL=C grep
instead.
Another possibility is to recompile grep with "./configure --disable-nls".
This will be improved in future versions of grep.
