I believe this ancient addresses don't work reliably.

Yes, indeed, the bug sounds really weird and interesting, but unfortunately
I'm not able to reproduce it here.  And my knowledge of the code is not
good enough to give hope that I could discover it just by staring into the
code.

But if you have spare time and would like to do the bug hunting, you could
try to compile another copy of gawk-3.1.4 and look whether you can reproduce
the bug with it.  If yes, it can be a good starting point for a hunt.
You can put printf's here and there and watch what's goning on...
Or if Arnold (the gawk maintainer) writes a patch, you can then verify that
it really fixes the bug.
