i thought i had verified it against vanilla gettext but clearly that wasnt the
case
at any rate, the thing that caused this [Gentoo] bug was the application of a
few patches to the bundled libtool in 0.14.1 to work around broken relinking
behavior ... said patches, when applied to the newer libtool bundled with
gettext 0.14.2, obviously didnt translate well
