I don't have the time right now to get involved into this
discussion. But maybe some of the notes of this old thread are
relevant here.

I remember these $(srcdir)-prefixed variables were troublesome,
be reading the above mail again it appears that I thought we
could do without them. Maybe that's wrong, or maybe if will
give you ideas.
