Grep on Solaris is the original AT&T grep, not GNU grep. You can obtain
a Solaris binary package grep 2.5 from http://www.sunfreeware.com and
other places. It installs into /usr/local/bin, so you can manipulate
your PATH to choose which grep you are using. In particular, AT&T fgrep
cannot handle -f files with more than a few thousand entries.
Uname, however, should work fine.
