gawk problem with s390 build

I have built both the 3.1.4 and the 3.1.5 versions on a Centos based 
S390 system and the resulting executable appears to have a parsing 
problem.  When the following is entered:

echo "parm1 parm2" | gawk '{print $1}'

the result I get is:
parm1 parm2

Is there something special that needs to be part of the configure?
