While your idea may have merit, it goes against what POSIX requires, and
you would be breaking more than you fix, in light of what has been
standardized. It is better for people to get used to writing /[:upper:]/
instead of /[A-Z]/, because then it will be portable to all POSIX
implementations of awk, rather than just your patched version of gawk.
