This looks like an installation problem with the gcc with which you
built gettext or tar.

To get around this problem, if you happen to have the HP cc compiler,
I'd recommend to rebuild gettext with this compiler:

  ./configure CC="cc -Ae -O" CXX="aCC -O"

Otherwise get some advice how to configure gcc optimally for your
machine type. You can also buy ready-to-use gcc binaries from
http://www.thewrittenword.com/
