I agree, that would be the one good argument I can see for including the 'eg'
tree in the distro.  I have never tried cross-compiling gawk, so I can't speak
to whether it generally works.

I don't care that much either, I had just thought that the general
principle was to build stuff inside the build directory, not inside
the source directory.  But if this would break cross-compilation, then
best to leave as is.  Does anybody know whether the current tree
cross-compiles successfully?  Certainly 'make check' would not work
in that situation, I think...
