I agree. In this case it appears acceptable to break up the sentence;
but the translator must be made aware of the first part of the sentence.

Which comments are extracted into the POT file is dependent on the
--add-comments options; usually (in the default po/Makefile.in.in) the
syntax is
      /* TRANSLATORS: ... */

Whereas /* xgettext: ... */ is recognized by xgettext for special flags,
but these comments are _not_ normally extracted to the POT file.

I would write the comment as follows:

  /* TRANSLATORS: The second part of a sentence. The first part is your
     translation of "Of those file names," above.  */
