AM_ICONV check fails with some shells

I'm mainly forwarding a bug report on my software that uses AM_ICONV:

This apparently doesn't work with "sh, ash and some other bsh compatible
shells" because there's a line feed inside ${..}:

    AC_MSG_RESULT([$]{ac_t:-
         }[$]am_cv_proto_iconv)

It fails with:

checking for iconv declaration... ./configure: "$as_me:$LINENO: result:
${ac_t:- }
        $am_cv_proto_iconv": bad substitution

Why is there a line feed and can this be fixed somehow?
