New Gawk User

If this is not the right place for my query please point me to the right 
location.

I am somewhat familiar with awk but new to Gnu and gawk.
I am using Windows XP Pro and I downloaded & installed the gawk-3.1.6-1-setup 
package.
Initially all I thought I had downloaded was 7 pdf files but I found the awk 
executables in my
C:\Program Files\GnuWin32\bin directory
When I tried a simple awk script to begin with, gawk did not like the syntax 
which was similar to it's usage example (see attached).
What else am I missing?
