A few extra infos:

1. gnubg (CLI) thinking 2ply: often less then a second
   gnubg (GUI) thinking 2ply: mostly more than 10 seconds

2. I just installed debian on my laptop (minimal + Xfree86-4.2 + 
   gcc-2.95, gtk2)
   gnubg (GUI) thinking 2ply: 1-3 seconds

Though this isn't a scientific measurement you can see the
difference. I think _it's_ a problem of some graphical stuff, either
nvidia, or Xfree86/GLX, or gtk)
