Greetings esteemed developers!

I've just installed 031201 and Help/About crashes.

(gnubg.exe:1296): Gdk-WARNING **: gdk_font_load: font name

Ouch. Now that I see this string I remember once seen that on the
mailing list. Too much still undocumentated, time to work on the
manual I guess ...

Anyhow, thx Joern

This should be quite easy, since readline has some history-stuff
built-in.

I've commited some code. The history file is $HOME/.gnubg/history

I've implemented a new command "clear hint", so you can do

hint
[modify eval/hint settings]
clear hint
hint

to force re-evaluation on the new settings.

Hi,

I tried to check out the latest sources from cvs. But when I tried to
connect as user 'anoncvs' I get the message 'no such user exists'. Should I
use another username or is something wrong in my cvs settings? My connection
string is :pserver:address@hidden:/cvs

So I downloaded a snapshot and followed the instructions on the page 'how to
compile a new build of gnu..'. I have placed the makefiles and the sources
in a directory c:\gnubg. But when I run gnubgOld.bat I get a load of error
messages and gnubg-old.exe is not built.
The first message I get is 'cannot find c:\gnubg\*.o';
after that comes:
In file included from drawboard3d.c:30:
inc3d.h:120: parse error before "Material"
inc3d.h:121: parse error before '*' token
inc3d.h:122: parse error before '*' token
etc.
Then comes
In file included from drawboard3d.c:32:
shadow.h:27: parse error before '*' token
shadow.h:28: parse error before '*' token
etc.
Some others:
drawboard3d.c: In function `TidyShadows':
drawboard3d.c:149: structure has no member named `Occluders'
drawboard3d.c:149: `OCC_BOARD' undeclared (first use in this function)
drawboard3d.c:149: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
drawboard3d.c:149: for each function it appears in.)

drawboard3d.c:162: structure has no member named `pieceList'
drawboard3d.c:163: structure has no member named `diceList'
drawboard3d.c:164: structure has no member named `DCList'

All those messages seem to be about the 3d board, so I have donwloaded and
unpacked the 3d packages in the gnubg folder as well.
My OS is Windows 2000.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Misja

Yes, you're probably right.

I've "s/iso8859-1/*/g" in the GTK fonts.

Yes, but that won't work.

Internally gnubg stores texts in UTF-8 (or ISO-8859-1, depending on
GTK+, OS, and other configure options). Text destined for the terminal
is converted to the terminal charset.

I'm in the process of modifying the HTML expoert code for a more general
solution.

Summary: Incorrect link to bug report page

Original Submission: The link on the Help menu dispplays the bug list
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?group=gnubg

rather than the bug reporting page
http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=addbug&group=gnubg

This may be intentional on your part to get people to check the extant bugs
before they submit, but it's not immediately obvious what to do next.

It would be ultra-cool if GnuBg automatically filled in the Build and
Release details. It must have them 'coz it displays them.

Could it even set the version? Probably not since the same build works on
different platforms.

Yes, it was my intention to redirect to the "browse" page.

I've added some text in bold on the submit bug page. The text includes a
link to the "browse" page, so hopefully submitters will check before they
report a duplicate bug.

With this change it should be OK to change the link.

To the first point please write a message to the mailing-list. I don't know
whether it was Joern's intention or not.

Pre-filling in the form is more of an HTML question. I've tried with e.g.

http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?func=addbug&group=gnubg&category_id=105&priori
ty=Normal&custom_tf1=030526&details=test+text

thus pre-setting some values. But the form still gets displayed the same
way, in both Mozilla and IE.

Thx, sorcerer ;-). Works like a charme, also the clear hint command.
Who needs gui, this is very comfortable now. Even reverse search and
other functions from shell are usable. Only one question: Is the
history limited to a certain amount of commands, does it read
$HISTSIZE from shell or does it save zillions of cmmands?

Ciao

Thanks for the link. That did the trick; in my IDE (Eclipse) it was enough
to substitute 'cvs' by
'cvsroot'.
However after checking out the newest build I still got the same compile
errors. Because all of them seemed to refer to the board3d package, I tried
what the gnubg3D.bat file would do... And that one built a complete
gnubg.exe for me!
So can it be that the gnubgOld.bat script is out of date?

Looks like the definition of pmr shouldn't be in the #if USE_GTK block.

On unix-boxes it's only necessary to do "cvs login" once. cvs stores a
file .cvspass with your login.

I'm guessing that it'll work fine with just "cvs checkout" in your batch
program?!

If you ever delete the .cvspass file you'll have to run "cvs login"
again.

I had a couple of requests regarding the Player Records.

My Player Records is already several hundred players full, and often,
navigating through the list can be slow and inconvenient due to its
size. Could someone add a simple letter shortcut to jump to specific
parts of the list? i.e. The list is open and I press 'M' so it jumps to
the first player starting with an 'M'. This would certainly make things
easier for those who make serious use of the list.

The second is a request to include the estimated FIBS rating. Right now,
it is the number one stat I use to estimate a player's performance, and
would be an *extremely* welcome addition to the numbers provided in the
Player Records. I rather imagine that it could easily take the error
rates already present in the Player Records, and provide the estimated
FIBS rating by applying the formula to them. If this is regarded
problematic due to adding a new value, this could be done on the fly so
that when clicking on a player in the list, it would display the
estimated FIBS rating in the stats, without ever making any permanent
changes to the records.

Hello,

when starting gnubg.exe it works until it says "Rendering Board", then it
crashes. Windows message is "Program error: gnubg.exe has generated errors
and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An
error log is created." DRWTSN32.EXE starts, but doesnt create any logfile
entries.

I tried this with several builds. Last try was build 1471.

My operating system is Windows 2000 english version. I tried with SP3 as
well as with SP4. My computer is HP Omnibook 6000 with graphics card ATI
Rage Mobility-M AGP 8 MB. I updated the video driver as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I reported this problem before, but it might have been overlooked.

If you do a rollout and then try to copy the 2 positions you rolled out it
causes gnu to crash.

I suppose you first installed setup.exe from
http://www.gnubg.org/downloads/windows/
(Installation Archive 11 MB, 030727)
before downloading the latest build.

If so, delete the file .gnubgautorc
(it's possible you need to change folder settings to see the
extension)
Afterwards, gnubg will run with the default settings.
If you want to keep the settings you have now, then first copy
.gnubgautorc to another folder.

Please reply if all is OK? ... or not?

I can not reproduce this.
(Win32 builds)
Not with 3D/Panel (either 2D or 3D), not with Old Layout.

I tried Hint; select 2 moves; Rollout; select the 2 moves; Copy
I tried Analyse Move; select 2 moves; Rollout; select the 2 moves;
Copy.

For what it's worth, I don't know if it's well documented that you can
pretty much fly through the list to the location you want by clicking on the
location button in the scroll bar (at the right of the player records
window). If you hold down the mouse button and drag the locator button down
the page, you can easily jump to the record you need.

I agree the type-in feature would be 'nice to have', but I have over 800
players entered, use the player records frequently, and find
"drag-scrolling" (sorry, I have no clue if there's a standard term for this
action) to be quite convenient. If you haven't used it, give it a try! If
you have, and just don't find it convenient, please accept my apologies for
wasting your time, and I hope my comments will at least help someone else!

I have a friend who plays quite a lot on TrueMoneyGames, but complains
that often a player accepting a challenge (or table) won't wait the time
it takes him to check the Player Records, hence causing him to lose an
opponent. He's been on my case quite a bit on this so I am fulfilling my
promise to pass on the request. I did play a bit on TMG recently and
didn't have much trouble, so I'll sit down and see how he's doing this.

Personally, aside from the FIBS rating request, one I would *REALLY*
like to see, whether on the fly or as an addition to the genuine PR, I'd
like to see it possible to re-order the names by clicking on the
appropriate columns. In other words, be able to re-order everything by
error rate, luck, etc. and be able to see who is doing best or worst. It
isn't very important, but it would be nice.

Yes, Øystein's Installation Archive includes the uninstaller.
Uninstall as you do with any other Win32 program (Add/Remove
Programs).

Any changes you made (especially games/matches/sessions you saved)
will not be removed.

The uninstall program will tell you if the gnubg Installation
Directory could be removed or not when it's finished.
Remainders after uninstall can be deleted by removing the
Installation Directory.
(something like: My Programs/gnubg, the name will be mentioned by the
uninstaller)

gnubg for Win32 does not make changes to the windows folders or the
system folders. All needed files are kept in it's own directory.
The install program adds a couple of lines to the Registry, but those
are removed by the uninstaller.

I don't think you should except to see any updates of the players'
records. As discussed earlier the grand plan is to provide some
relational database interface.

Anyway, you can do Edit->Enter Command: record show XyZ

This might be faster. However, do note the case sensivity of the player
name. I usually have the no gui version of gnubg running so after an invite
I can do:

record show opponentnick
record show mynick

If Old Layout functions
and 3D/Panel does not
(without .gnubgautorc gnubg starts with 2D),
I don't think the graphics card is the problem.
(anyone else: correct me when I am wrong?)

The most recent 3D package for Win32
( http://users.skynet.be/bk228456/board3Dfiles.exe )
has /textures, boards.xml and textures.txt.

gnubg.gtkrc is the only other file I know of, causing problems from
time to time.
Rename it to something else (e.g. gnubg_old.gtkrc) and see if gnubg
still crashes?

gnubg.c 3987 e.a. ....

Is it OK to change (for the no-gui to get build):

-----
#if USE_GTK

  if ( fX && GTKGetMove( anMove ) ) {
    /* we have a legal move in the GUI */
    /* Note that we override the move from the movelist */
    MoveKey ( ms.anBoard, anMove, auch );
    fHasMoved = TRUE;
  }
#endif /* ! USE_GTK */

  if ( !fHasMoved && plLastMove && ( pmr = plLastMove->plNext->p ) &&

       pmr->mt == MOVE_NORMAL ) {
    /* we have an old stored move */
    memcpy( anMove, pmr->n.anMove, sizeof anMove );
    MoveKey( ms.anBoard, anMove, auch );
    fHasMoved = TRUE;
  }
-----

so it reads:

-----
#if USE_GTK

  if ( fX && GTKGetMove( anMove ) ) {
    /* we have a legal move in the GUI */
    /* Note that we override the move from the movelist */
    MoveKey ( ms.anBoard, anMove, auch );
    fHasMoved = TRUE;
  }

  if ( !fHasMoved && plLastMove && ( pmr = plLastMove->plNext->p ) &&

       pmr->mt == MOVE_NORMAL ) {
    /* we have an old stored move */
    memcpy( anMove, pmr->n.anMove, sizeof anMove );
    MoveKey( ms.anBoard, anMove, auch );
    fHasMoved = TRUE;
  }
#endif /* ! USE_GTK */
-----

Until 031129 (1.1466) all goes fine.

Since 031130 (1.1471) Help / About crashes gnubg GTK+ (3D/Panel and
Old Layout)

I've checked in a simple fix to get it to build.

Hi folks (especiallay Joern),

I just got access to a compaq dl 580 g3 with 4 xeon 2.8ghz and
hyperthreading activated. I would like to do some work using smp.

What do I have to do for activating and using this feature? For now
a rollout uses only one CPU.

Ciao

Achim

Correct. "moverecord *pmr" should be moved outside the USE_GTK block.

Start coding. Come back in a month or two :-)

I actually think that building a no-interface analysis/rollout only
version of gnubg (getting all the needed settings from a master) is a
better approach than trying to make gnubg threaded. It also works both
when using a network of machines or a multi-cpu machine. Most OSes
would soon migrate separate copies to separate CPUs on an SMP machine
and there are no locking issues to resolve, only simple
synchronisation ones.

For analysis, issuing separate moves to separate clients would work
reasonably well, although some caching would be lost. For rollouts,
passing a starting position and the rollout settings to each client and
then doing a rollout locally and waiting for the clients to complete
is the best method (needs keepalives and timeouts to prevent one
client stopping from hanging the system), but this would allow for
stopping the rollout on the master and getting to a consistent state
for saving a rollout so it could be extended.
