I tried this here (Win32, several builds),
I can not reproduce it.

But attached is crash-copy.sgf (from Hugh)

Open the match
Go to 2nd move Player1 (31 roll)

Select move Rank 1, Copy: OK
Select move Rank 2, Copy: gnubg crashes
Select move Rank 1 and 2, Copy: gnubg crashes
Select move Rank 2 and 3, Copy: OK
Select move Rank 1, 2 and 3, Copy: OK

(hugh's .gnubgautorc is included in ZIP file)

What is going on here?
