Well, what you suggest or expect will be possible probably within
the next fifty years ;-). AFAIK nowadays there is no computer program 
(concerning games) that is able to give "human readable" explanations.

For now I can only advice you to read 1 or 2 good backgammon books
(start with Paul Magriels "Backgammon") and try to understand the
game. Sooner or later you will be able to see more and more, why GNU 
Backgammon does like a certain move.

You will build a catalogue of items like

- number of shots
- number of blots
- number of making a certain point
- good attack
- good defence anchor
- timing
- type of strategy
...

and keep a number of reference positions (based on computer
rollouts, on reading books and based on intuition. Comparing this
"catalogue" with a certain position will help you to "selfexplain" a
move.

Not exactly. GNU Backgammon uses an engine that is based on some 
positions which are rolled out millions of times. Google for neural
nets in computer games and you will find more.
