The pop-up window at the start is caused by the Hugh Sconyers bearoff DVD
set.
Choose 'Settings - Options'; click the 'Bearoff' tab and uncheck both cases
there.

Gnubg not playing...
Your PC / videocard does not like the 3D appearance.
Choose 'Settings - Appearance'; click the 'General' tab and check 2D instead
of 3D
