[Bug-gnubg] Re: OS/X Tiger Builds: 3dboards Issue

Howdy,

After generating the initial release of OS/X yesterday (using latest CVS
head), I decided to investigate the 3d problem. The issue is seems related
to X server (Although similar thing occurs if you use stock X11), and may
have some relationship with OpenGL. This part we were aware of previously.
The  error in question appears immediately after you go into Preferences
with 3d boards style set.

One other telling piece of info is that if I ssh (with X11 forwarding) into
my MAC, and run gnubg it runs properly in 3dboard mode (The X11 server on my
linux box does not crash, and proceeds properly). This suggests that there
is a specific incompatibility with what appears to be OpenGL code and the
X11 servers running on OS/X Tiger.

There were earlier versions of gnu (2+ years old) that did not experience
this problem - but that was before a serious of sweeping changes to the
appearances/preview were made.

Attached is a Trace dump of Xquartz when it dies. It fails the same way
everytime. In the crashed thread at this line: __glXMakeCurrentReadSGI +
1036  X11 core dumps.

Gnubg dies because the X11 server crashes and then exits. Prior to exiting
gnu is simply in a state of processing X11 messages (queue). The error is
hard to pinpoint because of the asynchronous nature of this bug. Gnu doesn't
throw any assertions or any potential problems on the console before
exiting. X11 eventually gets a message, tries to process it and dies.

After trial and error I discovered that the offending code is specific to
gtkcolour3d. If I comment out  code in the color picker that updates the
current color selection panes then the problem disappears. Of course the
colour preview panes (The one with the color and texture displayed on it)
just shows solid black. At least though the 3d builds don't fatally crash.
The colour picker still works - the colour preview pane does not.

I will see about doing more investigation on the weekend, however I managed
to put the colour picker hack into the build late last night. The side
effect is that the preview panes in 3d mode show black. As well when you
change a colour the main board gets update improperly (squashed), but you
can get around this by flipping back and forth between 2d and 3d views. I
should point out that the preview board does update properly.

This is just an informational message, in the event that someone might have
some insight into this.
