It is oriented as you say, this is to make it clear who's got the cube. An option, "Always show cube numbers vertically", or something similar could be added.The sideways look is needed for the auto doubles, rarely used I know. And I like the fact that the direction changes depending on who makes the next cube decision.
I understand this, but I felt that the position of the cube (top, middle or bottom of the screen) was clear enough and the fancy writing orientation more of an annoyance. A matter of taste.
