Hi,

Yes, I believe someone used Intel some years ago. I don't remember who. I also believe Microsoft VC has been used. At least there is no ethical/principled issued against compiling GNU Backgammon with a non-OpenSource compiler. However, if you try, you will probably get some problems on the way.

Good luck if you decide to try, and please report back any problems arising.

Has anyone ever looked into alternate compilers (such as those sold by Intel)?  Is there an ethical/principled issue against using non-OpenSource?  The goal would be increased speed due to better optimization, etc.  For example, I believe the *Intel® C++ Compiler Professional Edition for Linux* *has a free trial download and academic price around $170.  (~$2k commercial license).
