The problem with the disappearing boards.xml file (private board designs) has hopefully been solved. I recreated the problem when I saved a design and entered an invalid character ("&") in its name. This corrupted the file and when it was next read in, it couldn't be interpreted so nothing was loaded. When a design was then added, it was the only one saved in boards.xml. So avoid special characters and if you're concerned about something you're about to use, save a copy of the the file before saving the design. Finally, if you ever notice that your designs are gone and you have no backup, you might be able to repair the file by deleting the final section with a primitive editor such as Notepad (if you use something like Word or Internet Explorer, it won't be able to interpret the file). But don't get any bright ideas about editing boards.xml to do other things that would otherwise be awkward. Doing so apparently requires an XSLT stylesheet that I couldn't locate in any of the folders. Without it, results are unpredictable.
