Ah, yes, that part makes sense. What I was missing was:

...this part. Thank you! I'll let the bug reporter know. That does also
work for me; I just hadn't thought to try it.
There is one oddity that I can reproduce in the text console, although not
in the GUI. If I end the game with end game, it seems to stop at the end
of the game (requiring new game) if the player wins, but if gnubg wins, it
automatically advances to the next game. This results in the confusing
"abandon this match" prompt if you run new game again, since the game has
already been started.
I also got a somewhat weird result once while testing this on the console.
Notice the weird "gnubg wins a (null)" in the message after the end of the
match.
(Game over) gnubg rolls 3, eagle rolls 5.
