I put gnulib source code in gl/ and gnulib m4 files in gl/m4, and then
let gettext write into m4/.  My top-level Makefile.am then has:

ACLOCAL_AMFLAGS = -I m4 -I gl/m4

I haven't noticed any problems with this.  I guess the overlapping
files are reasonable close in version to be compatible.

Btw, using 'gnulib-tool --import' for the first time require some
manual bootstrapping, if I recall correctly.  When I find a new
project that I gnulibify, I'll try to make --import do the right
thing.
