Why not the simpler:
m4_ifndef([AC_USE_SYSTEM_EXTENSIONS],
[AC_DEFUN([AC_USE_SYSTEM_EXTENSIONS], [AC_GNU_SOURCE])])
Anyways, I feel uncomfortable using undocumented macros, so my first
order of business is patching Autoconf to document m4_version_compare
and m4_PACKAGE_VERSION.
