PS: I should have clarified what Mac OS X version(s) I was talking about: The
data reported in my email was from Mac OS X 10.6.8. Tonight, I'll compare this
with a 10.5 machine of mine; and I could try get hold of a 10.4 machine, too,
though this may have to wait a few days. On the other hand, I don't have a 10.7
machine available right now; but it should be trivial to get plenty of testers
for that (I can try to recruit some, if necessary).
Note that according to some statistics, 10.6 and 10.7 together make up 83% or
so of all Mac OS X installations (consistent with
<http://update.omnigroup.com/>,
<http://www.adium.im/sparkle/?forceShow[]=osVersion#osVersion>,
<http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0&qpcustomb=*2&qptimeframe=M&qpsp=158>);
as to 10.4, depending on what source you look at, it's share is 3.3%
(www.netmarketshare.com), <1% (Adium), or 9.3% (OmniGroup; however, their
dataset for 10.4 looks fishy, so I am going to ask them about that).
What I want to say here is: The majority of OS X users run 10.6 and upward, so
I think that should be the focus of any developments; of course, trying to
still support older versions fully certainly is a desirable goal!
Cheers,
Max
