Try 'mount -t vfat -o check=r /dev/sdb2 /mnt/ipod'

If you still get the warning, could you send me the .config of the
kernel?

The vfat warning may have nothing to do with this (in most cases, you
can even ignore it..)
-> Does the .gnupod dir exist?
It looks like you didn't run gnupod_INIT.pl.
You need to run it before using gnupod the first time.
It creates the Directory-Tree and converts old data
